• புகழ்பெற்ற இந்தியக் கணிதவியலாளரான ஸ்ரீனிவாச ராமானுஜனின் பிறந்தநாளைக் குறிக்கும் வகையில் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் டிசம்பர் 22ஆம் தேதி தேசிய கணித தினமாக அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது. 
• அவரது படைப்புகளைக் கொண்டாடவும், கணிதத்தில் அவரை ஒரு ஜாம்பவான் என்று அங்கீகரிக்கவும் கணித தினம் குறிக்கப்படுகிறது.
• தேசிய கணித தினம் என்பது ராமானுஜனின் மகத்தான சாதனைகளை நினைவுகூரும் ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பம் மற்றும் நமது அன்றாட வாழ்வில் கணிதத்தின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. 

சீனிவாச ராமானுஜன் யார்?

• ஸ்ரீனிவாச ராமானுஜன் தமிழ்நாட்டின் ஈரோட்டில் 1887 ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ் பிராமண குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்தார். அவர் கணிதத்தில் முறையான கல்வியைப் பெறவில்லை என்றாலும், அவரது பங்களிப்புகள் புதிய கருத்துகள் மற்றும் யோசனைகளைப் பயன்படுத்தி சிக்கலான கணித சிக்கல்களைத் தீர்க்க ஆழமான பகுப்பாய்வுகளை வழங்கின. 
• ராமானுஜன் 'முடிவிலியை அறிந்த மனிதர்' என்று அன்புடன் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.
• அவர் டிரினிட்டி கல்லூரியில் சேர்ந்தார் மற்றும் லண்டன் கணித சங்கத்தின் உறுப்பினர்களில் ஒருவராக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டார். 
• ராமானுஜன் டிரினிட்டி கல்லூரி கேம்பிரிட்ஜின் சக உறுப்பினர்களில் ஒருவரான முதல் இந்தியராகவும் பரிந்துரைக்கப்பட்டார்.

முக்கியத்துவம்

• சீனிவாச ராமானுஜனின் பிறந்தநாளைக் குறிக்கும் வகையில், தேசிய கணித தினம் அவரது பொன்னான சாதனைகளைக் கொண்டாடுகிறது. தேசிய அளவிலும் உலக அளவிலும் உலகின் தலைசிறந்த கணிதவியலாளர்களில் ஒருவராகக் கருதப்படுகிறார். 
• 2012 ஆம் ஆண்டில், முன்னாள் பிரதமர் டாக்டர் மன்மோகன் சிங், புகழ்பெற்ற சீனிவாச ராமானுஜனைக் கௌரவிக்கும் வகையில் இந்த நாளை தேசிய கணித தினமாகக் கொண்டாடினார்.
• 1887 ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ்நாட்டில் பிறந்த ராமானுஜன் தனது வாழ்நாளின் பெரும்பகுதியை வறுமையில் கழித்தார். சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே கணிதத்தில் மிகுந்த ஆர்வத்தை வளர்த்துக் கொண்டார். தன்னை நிலைநிறுத்த, அவர் ஒரு வயது வந்தவராக ஒரு எழுத்தர் வேலையைப் பெற்றார், 
• ஆனால் தனது கணிதப் படிப்பை சுயாதீனமாக தொடர்ந்தார். சர்வதேசப் பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் இருந்து சில புகழ்பெற்ற பேராசிரியர்களுடன் தொடர்பு கொண்டு, ராமானுஜன் இறுதியில் டிரினிட்டி கல்லூரிக்குச் சென்றார்.
• கணிதத்தின் முக்கியத்துவம் குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தவே கணித தினம் அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது. அன்றாட வாழ்வில் கணிதத்தின் முக்கியத்துவத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள மக்கள் இந்த நாளைக் கொண்டாடுகிறார்கள்.

• பல்வேறு அதிகாரிகளால் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்ட பல முகாம்கள் மூலம் பல்வேறு மாணவர்களுக்கும், கணித ஆசிரியர்களுக்கும் இலவசப் பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்படுகிறது.

Who was Srinivasa Ramanujan?

• Srinivasa Ramanujan was born to a Tamil Brahmin family in 1887 at Erode in Tamil Nadu. Although he did not receive a formal education in mathematics, his contributions provided in-depth analyses to solve complex mathematical problems using new concepts and ideas. Ramanujan is fondly known as ‘the man who knew infinity.
• He joined Trinity College and was elected as one of the members of the London Mathematical Society. Ramanujan was also nominated as the first Indian to be one of the fellow members of Trinity College Cambridge.

Importance

• Marking the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, National Mathematics Day celebrates his golden achievements. He is regarded as one of the world’s greatest mathematicians on a national and global level. In 2012, the former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh marked this day as the National Mathematics Day to honor the legendary Srinivasa Ramanujan.
• Born in 1887 in Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan spent most of his life in poverty. He developed a keen interest in mathematics right from a young age. 
• To sustain himself, he took the job of a clerk as an adult but continued his mathematical studies independently. Getting in touch with some renowned professors from international universities, Ramanujan eventually made his way to Trinity College.

Significance

• Mathematics Day is marked to raise awareness about the importance of mathematics. People celebrate this day to understand the importance of Maths in everyday life. 
• The government takes several steps to teach and motivate the public and the country’s youth to develop a positive attitude toward mathematics. 
• Free training is provided to various students and mathematics teachers through several camps organised by different authorities.
