• தமிழைச் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கை ஒரு நூற்றாண்டு காலமாகத் தமிழ்நாட்டில் இருந்து வந்தது. 1918-ம் ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாதம் 18-ம் நாள், சென்னை பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரியில் நடைபெற்ற புலவர்கள் கூட்டத்தில், சென்னைப் பல்கலைக் கழகம் தமிழ்மொழியைச் செம்மொழியாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று வலியுறுத்தி தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டது. 
• நாடு விடுதலை அடைந்த பிறகே, தமிழ்மொழியைச் செம்மொழியாக நடுவண் அரசு அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கை எழுந்தது. மறைமலை அடிகள், க.அப்பாதுரையார், தேவநேயப் பாவாணர் முதலிய தமிழறிஞர்கள் இந்தக் கோரிக்கையை வலியுறுத்திக் கட்டுரைகள் எழுதினர். 
• பல்வேறு தமிழ் அமைப்புகள் தீர்மானங்களை நிறைவேற்றி நடுவண் அரசுக்கு அனுப்பின. ஆனால், தலைவர் கலைஞர் வலியுறுத்த தொடங்கிய பிறகே இந்தக் கோரிக்கைக்கு வலு சேர்ந்தது.
• தமிழைச் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கக் கோரி, 1996-ம் ஆண்டு முதலமைச்சர் கருணாநிதி நடுவண் அரசுக்கு ஒரு கடிதம் எழுதினார். அந்தக் கடிதத்தை மைசூருவில் உள்ள இந்திய மொழிகள் மைய நிறுவனத்துக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்த நடுவண் அரசு, அது குறித்து ஆய்வு செய்யுமாறு அறிவுறுத்தியது. 
• மொழிகள் மைய நிறுவனம் அறிஞர்களுடன் கலந்தாய்வு செய்த பின்னர், தமிழுக்குச் செம்மொழி தகுதி வழங்கலாம் என்று நடுவண் அரசுக்கு பரிந்துரை செய்தது. 
• 1999 ஜனவரி 16-ம் நாள், சென்னையில் நடைபெற்ற திருவள்ளுவர் நாள் விழாவில் பேசிய முதலமைச்சர் கலைஞர், “தமிழ் செம்மொழியா, இல்லையா? என்ற விவாதம் இனிமேலும் தேவை இல்லை. தமிழ் செம்மொழிதான். நடுவண் அரசு அதை உடனடியாக அறிவிக்கவேண்டும்” எனக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.
• இதே கோரிக்கையை வலியுறுத்தி 2003-ம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதம் 22-ம் நாள், பிரதமர் வாஜ்பாய்க்குக் கடிதம் எழுதினார் கலைஞர். பின்னர் 2004-ம் ஆண்டு மே மாதம் 27-ம் நாள், பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங் ஐக்கிய முற்போக்கு கூட்டணி அரசின் குறைந்த அளவு பொதுச்செயல் திட்டத்தை வெளியிட்டார். 
• கலைஞர் வலியுறுத்தலுக்கு இணங்க, தமிழ் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்படும் என்ற கோரிக்கை அத்திட்டத்தில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டது. 
• அதன்படி, 2004-ம் ஆண்டுச் செப்டம்பர் 17-ம் நாள் நடைபெற்ற நடுவண் அரசின் அமைச்சரவை கூட்டத்தில், தமிழைச் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்க முடிவு செய்யப்பட்டது. 
• அதற்கான ஆணை, 2004 அக்டோபர் 12-ம் நாள் நடுவண் அரசால் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. 2007, ஆகத்து 18-ம் நாள் சென்னையில் முதலமைச்சர் கலைஞர் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்ற விழாவில், நடுவண் அமைச்சர் அர்ஜூன் சிங், செம்மொழி தமிழ் மைய நிறுவனத்தைத் தொடங்கி வைத்தார். 
• அதற்கான அலுவலகக் கட்டடம், 2008 ஜூன் 30-ம் நாள் கலைஞர் அவர்களால் சென்னையில் திறந்து வைக்கப்பட்டது.
• நான்காவது முறையாகத் தி.மு.க அமைச்சரவை பதவியேற்றபோது தமிழ் ஆட்சி மொழி மற்றும் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டுத் துறைக்காக ஒரு தனி அமைச்சகத்தை உருவாக்கி அந்தத் துறை 13-5-1996 முதல் செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றது.

• The demand to declare Tamil as the classical language came from Tamil Nadu for a century. On March 18, 1918, a resolution was passed in a meeting of poets held at Pachaiyappan College, Chennai, insisting that the University of Chennai should accept Tamil as the official language. 
• After the independence of the country, there was a demand that the central government should declare Tamil as the official language. Tamil scholars such as Thiramalai Adigal, K. Appaduraiyar, Devaneyab Bhawanar etc. wrote articles emphasizing this demand. 
• Various Tamil organizations passed resolutions and sent them to the Central Government. However, this demand gained strength only after the leader started insisting.
• In 1996, Chief Minister Karunanidhi wrote a letter to the Madhya Pradesh government demanding that Tamil be declared the official language. The central government sent the letter to the Center for Indian Languages in Mysuru, which instructed it to look into it. 
• The Central Institute of Languages, after consulting scholars, recommended to the central government that Tamil be accorded classical status. On January 16, 1999, speaking at the Thiruvalluvar Day function in Chennai, the Chief Minister said, “Tamil is classical or not? The debate is no longer needed. Tamil is classical language. The central government should announce it immediately.
• On April 22, 2003, the artist wrote a letter to Prime Minister Vajpayee stressing the same demand. Then on 27 May 2004, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released the United Progressive Alliance Government's Limited Public Action Plan. 
• In line with the artist's insistence, a request was added to the program that Tamil be declared as the classical language. Accordingly, in the cabinet meeting held on September 17, 2004, it was decided to declare Tamil as the classical language. 
• The order was issued by the Central Government on 12th October 2004. On August 18, 2007, in a ceremony presided over by Chief Minister Kalainar, Union Minister Arjun Singh inaugurated the Classical Tamil Center. The office building was inaugurated by the artist on June 30, 2008 in Chennai.
• When the DMK cabinet took office for the fourth term, a separate ministry was created for the Tamil language and Tamil culture department and that department has been functioning since 13-5-1996.
