- உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள தமிழ் மக்கள் பயன்பெறும் வகையில் முதன்முதலாக தமிழ் இணையப் பல்கலைக் கழகமும் தொடங்கப்பட்டதும் தி.மு.க ஆட்சியில்தான். தற்போது இது, தமிழ் இணையக் கல்விக் கழகம் என்ற பெயருடன் செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது.
- மாநிலம் முழுவதும் உள்ள 1,200 மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளிகளில் 11 மற்றும் 12-ம் வகுப்புகளில் கணினியை விருப்பப் பாடமாகக் கற்பிக்கும் திட்டம், 187 கோடியே 66 லட்ச ரூபாய் செலவில் முதலமைச்சர் கலைஞரால் தொடங்கப்பட்டது.
- இதனால், ஒவ்வொரு பள்ளியிலும், 40 மாணவர்கள் என்ற அடிப்படையில், சுமார் 48,000 மாணவர்கள், ஆண்டுதோறும் மென்பொருள் துறையில் வேலை பெறும் வாய்ப்புக்கு தகுதியுடையவர்களாக வெளியே வந்தனர்.
- இத்திட்டம், அரசின் அனைத்து கலை மற்றும் அறிவியல் கல்லூரிகள், மருத்துவம் மற்றும் பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகள், வேளாண் மற்றும் கால்நடை மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகள் ஆகியவற்றுக்கும் விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டது.
- இதன் மூலம், ஆண்டுதோறும் 60,000 மாணவ மாணவியர் கணினிக் கல்வியிலும் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். பள்ளிகளிலும் கல்லூரிகளிலும் அறிமுகம் செய்யப்பட்ட இந்தக் கணினி கல்வித் திட்டம்தான், இந்தியாவிலேயே முதலாவது மிகப்பெரிய திட்டம் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
- இத்திட்டத்தை எதிர்த்துத் தொடரப்பட்ட வழக்கை 1999 ஏப்ரல் 23-ம் தேதி தள்ளுபடி செய்த சென்னை உயர்நீதிமன்றம், “சமூகநீதிக் காவலனாகப் பாடுபடும் தமிழக அரசு, கிராமப்புற மற்றும் நடுத்தர மக்களிடையே படிக்க வருபவர்களின் நலனில் கவனம் கொள்ளும் என்று நம்பிக்கை கொள்வதாக” தி.மு.க அரசுக்கு பாராட்டுத் தெரிவித்தது.
- It was during the DMK rule that the first Tamil Internet University was started to benefit Tamil people all over the world. Currently it is functioning under the name of Tamil Internet Education Institute.
- A scheme to teach computer as an optional subject in classes 11 and 12 in 1,200 higher secondary schools across the state was launched by Chief Minister Kalam at a cost of Rs 187 crore 66 lakh.
- Thus, on the basis of 40 students in each school, about 48,000 students came out every year eligible for employment in the software industry.
- The scheme was extended to all Government Arts and Science Colleges, Medical and Dental Colleges, Agricultural and Veterinary Colleges. Through this, 60,000 students have passed computer education every year. It is noteworthy that this computer education program introduced in schools and colleges is the first of its kind in India.
- On April 23, 1999, the Madras High Court dismissed the case against the scheme and expressed appreciation to the DMK government that it "believes that the Tamil Nadu government, which strives to be the guardian of social justice, will focus on the welfare of those who come to study among the rural and middle class".
