Another counterpart event is Nagasaki Day which remembers similar nuclear attack on another Japanese city Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. 

Hiroshima was home to the 2nd Army Headquarters who were responsible for the defense of southern Japan and was therefore very important from military viewpoint.

It was also an important center of storage, communications, and assembly of soldiers. For these and many other reasons, Hiroshima was chosen as the first site for bomb dropping.

On August 6, 1945, an American bomber dropped an atomic bomb over Hiroshima killing around 80,000 people instantly. Three days later, a second bomber dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki killing another 40,000 people. 

After these two bombings Japan was forced to surrender unconditionally on August 15. The country saw major devastation and further damage came as a result of radiation that hung around for decades and took other tens of thousands of life year after year.
