தமிழ்நாடு அரசின் தமிழ் வளர்ச்சித் துறை தமிழ் மொழியின் சொல்வளத்தையும், காலப்பழமையையும், தனித்தன்மையையும் வெளிக் கொண்டு வர வேண்டுமென்பதற்காக தமிழ் சொற்பிறப்பியல் அகரமுதலி வெளியிடும் நோக்கத்துடன் செந்தமிழ் சொற்பிறப்பியல் அகரமுதலித் திட்ட இயக்ககம் ஒன்றை அமைத்தது.
இந்த இயக்ககத்தின் சார்பில் 12 மடலங்களில் அடங்கும் 31 தொகுதிகளும் 12000 பக்கங்கள் கொண்ட பேரகரமுதலியாக வெளியிடப் பெற்றுள்ளன.
இவை மிக விரிவான முறையில் சொற்களின் வேரும் வரலாறும் காட்டியும், பட விளக்கங்கள், இலக்கண, இலக்கிய, கல்வெட்டு, நாட்டுப்புறச் சொல் விளக்கங்க மேற்கோள்களைக் கொண்டும், திராவிட மொழிகளிலும், உலக மொழிகளிலும் தமிழ்ச் சொற்களின் ஊடாட்டத்தைக் காட்டியும் அரைக்கலைக்களஞ்சிய அமைப்பில் வெளியிடப் பெற்றிருக்கின்றன. இதன் முதல் பகுதி 1985 ஆம் ஆண்டிலும், கடைசித் தொகுதியான 31 ஆம் தொகுதி 2011 ஆம் ஆண்டிலுமாக வெளியிடப் பெற்றது.
தமிழ் சொற்பிறப்பியல் அகரமுதலியை எண்மப்படுத்த (கணனி மயமாக்க) நிதி ஒதுக்கீடு செய்து தமிழக அரசு அறிக்கை வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

The Department of Tamil Development, Government of Tamil Nadu has set up a Senthamil Etymology Akaramudi Project Directorate with the aim of publishing Tamil Etymology Akaramudi to bring out the vocabulary, antiquity and uniqueness of the Tamil language.
On behalf of this department, 31 volumes in 12 volumes have been published with a total of 12000 pages. These have been published in a semi-encyclopedic format showing the root and history of the words in a comprehensive manner, pictorial descriptions, grammatical, literary, epigraphical, folkloric citations and the interaction of Tamil words in Dravidian languages and world languages.
The first volume was published in 1985 and the last volume, Volume 31, was published in 2011. The Tamil Nadu government has released a report allocating funds for the digitization of the Tamil etymological alphabet.
