World Heritage Day 2024: The theme of World Heritage Day 2023 is “Heritage Changes”. This theme highlights the contribution of volunteers in helping maintain heritage sites around the world. Every year, a new theme is announced on World Heritage Day.
This year’s World Heritage Day theme revolves around the changes caused to heritage sites due to climate change. The theme aims to explore climate change through the lens of cultural heritage.
Heritage Day - What are Heritage Sites?
World Heritage Day 2024: Heritage sites are sites of historical or cultural significance. Three types of heritage sites are celebrated during World Heritage Day, given as follows.
Cultural Heritage Sites: These include historical buildings, paintings, art, and work of monumental importance. Some examples of cultural heritage sites are the Taj Mahal, Lotus temple, etc.
Natural Heritage Sites: These include natural areas that show unique pieces of Earth's record of life and examples of ecological and biological evolutionary processes. The Western Ghats is an example of a Natural Heritage Site.
Mixed Heritage Sites: These consist of a mix of both cultural as well as natural heritage sites. In India, there is only one Mixed heritage site as mentioned below.

History of Heritage Day
World Heritage Day 2024: The history of World Heritage Day can be traced back to 1982, when ICOMOS proposed April 18 as the International Day for Monuments and Sites. This event was followed by UNESCO's adoption of Heritage Day during its 22nd General Conference in 1983.
The ICOMOS organization was created based on the principles in the Venice Charter, also known as the 1964 International Charter on the conservation and restoration of monuments and sites. Since then ICOMOS provides a different theme annually to celebrate World Heritage Day and educate the world about the same.
