11th MAY - NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DAY 2023: On May 11, 1999, the day was first commemorated. The date was chosen since it was on this day that India joined the elite squad of nuclear-armed nations. India recently accomplished three nuclear tests at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Testing Range which is situated in Rajasthan on 11th May, 1998. The trials were carried out as part of Operation Shakti.
On May 13, two additional nuclear tests were carried out. All of the experiments were overseen by the late A P J Abdul Kalam. The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER), and the Bhabha Atomic Centre, carried out the operation (BARC).
“Smiling Buddha,” was the first test in 1974, the tests in Pokhran were India’s second nuclear test.
India also debuted the first ever indigenous aircraft, the Hansa-3, which was developed by the National Aerospace Institute and soared to the skies in Bengaluru on May 11, 1998. It was a two-seater light plane used for espionage, flight training, and other missions.
The test launch of India’s surface-to-air missile Trishul was also completed on the 11th of May. The tests were carried out by the DRDO as part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. It has been accepted into the Indian Army and Air Force.
The government chose to designate the day as National Technology Day as a result of all of these technical achievements.
